The Mistake the Apes Made

Tat:  Listen to me.

Tit:  yes?  what?

Tat:  This is the impossible conversation.

Tit:  Don't underestimate me.  You alwa...

Tat:  Its not a matter of what we possess or lack.  We are each already perfect, the specimen we are meant to be.  The issue is not my speaking or your listening.

Tit/Tat (simultaneously, with Tit joining after realizing that the client is returning, as s/he does, to a one of a handful of phrases that s/he feels are central to his philosophy, to her meditation on the meaning of the meaninglessness):  This is another problem that comes back to "the false certainty of words."

Tit (finishing the sentence in a quick burst of nervous air):  is comforting none the less.

Tat:  Not when the chasm of your speaking and my hearing tears open the earth.   Me certain what I heard, you certain what you spoke.

Tit:  what I heard and what you spoke, you mean.

Tat:  yes, of course, the pronouns are the least of our concerns.
